The first known arrests over new squatting law
happened about an hour ago by squatters occupying a comercial property,
who were using the upstairs residential area as an un-lived in social
centre.
The police turned up this morning at around 11am to raid the
property on London Road in Brighton, despite no crime being committed -
as the new law restricts people living in unoccupied buildings, but not
visiting them. Regardless, Sussex police have now arrested three people
who attached themselves with glue, spending three hours to enter through
barricades to remove them.
One of the visitors now on the roof
of the squat said "On the roof init! Clowns got in but its gonna take
them ages!" at 2pm, hours before three people were arrested inside the
residential part of the building, despite not squatting the residential
property.
The two roof top occupiers say they are up there to
stay, as cops miserably fail to negotiate a deal with them. Support is
currently gathering, but if you are free to pop down and say hello it'd
be appreciated!

Updated International Squatters Convergence Info
Following on from successful gatherings in Dijon ’07, Leeds ’08, Berlin ’08, Bristol ’09, Barcelona ’10 and Grenoble ’10, a convergence will be held in Brighton this May. Come enjoy the sand, sea and sun (maybe) and network with squatters from all over the world.
There will be practical workshops on skills and politics relevant to contemporary squatting. There will also be film showings and exhibitions to showcase the struggle of housing and squatting movements worldwide .
There are already workshops confirmed by attendees, however, we always need more. Please get in contact if you can offer something. There will also be open spaces throughout the convergence to run spontaneous workshops, exhibitions or discussions, both formally and informally.
This convergence will be more necessary than ever, given the impending criminalisation of squatting in the UK, following the example of many other European countries, e.g. Holland. Come to network and strategise about how we can survive the impending law change and ever-present state repression.
This is a chance to catch up with your fellow squatters, to learn new skills and to enjoy yourself!

We Won’t Be Criminalised!

So the House of Lords pushed through the law to criminalise squatting in residential buildings late last night.
Brighton squatter’s first response is a call out that we will be having a march to show our defiance of any law politicians try and impose on us. Meet 2pm on Saturday in Victoria Gardens.
We are also releasing this statement:
The criminalisation of squatting in residential buildings represents a persecution of the homeless and vulnerably housed population of Britain. It creates a costly mess that will burden the taxpayer while exacerbating the problems of homelessness, overcrowding and the housing crisis in general.
It will burden taxpayers with an additional bill in an already critical economic situation.
The politicians ignored the responses to the consultation concerning
squatting. 96% of respondents were in favour of no change to the legal rights of squatters. Is it any surprise nobody trusts politicians?
The Legal Aid Bill concerning squatters will bring about a new era of
empty properties falling into ruin while the number of rough sleepers
will rise.
Landlords who choose to leave 100,000s of properties vacant will be the only beneficiaries of this law.
Squatters without squatters’ rights will be forced onto the streets and become less able to help themselves, as a social policy this law will create havoc for services already facing severe cuts.
However, those who squat will continue to squat and will resist any attempt to make them homeless.
David Cameron may have made his worst policy decision yet. This Bill is not the end of squatting; it is the beginning of a struggle that MP’s will wish they had averted when they had the chance.
Squatting is NOT over, the struggle is only just beginning.
-No Compliance with the Legal Aid Bill,
-No Tolerance of stupid laws,
-Homes For All
-Justice for the Homeless.
